The gun battle started after officers were called to an apartment building in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, in suburban Denver, because of a complaint around 5:15 a.m., after responding to a similar call at the same location about four hours earlier.
A now deceased lone gunman shot two civilians and five sheriff's deputies, one fatally, Sunday morning as they were responding to a domestic disturbance call in a residential neighborhood outside Denver, Colo, local authorities say.
"All of them were shot very, very quickly and they all went down nearly within seconds of each other", Spurlock told reporters at a news conference, calling it an "ambush-type" attack. "It was more of an ambush-type of an attack on our officers".
Authorities identified the gunman - who was killed in Sunday's shooting - as 37-year-old Matthew Riehl.
Forster told CNN that Riehl enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2003. "I don't think words can express at a time like this the pain that these families, and the friends of these officers, are going through".
Vira Cover, 50, was still sleeping when her fiance called around 6:30 a.m. and told her to stay inside because of an active shooter in their apartment complex. At one point he said there were well over 100 rounds fired.
Parrish worked at the DCSO for about seven months.
"They all went down nearly within seconds of each other, so it was more of an ambush-type of attack on our officers", said Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock. He was married and was the father of two young children. "I can't tell you how hard it is for a leader to sit down with the spouse of an officer who was killed in the line of duty". "He was doing his job, and he was doing his job well, and his life was taken this morning".
Four other law enforcement officers who were shot in the melee are all stable, according to Spurlock.
He maintained that attempts were made to evacuate residents to safety, despite the fact that the suspect shot two civilians who lived in neighboring apartment units.
The company is now donating to the Douglas County Sheriff's Fallen Officer Fund.
"I do know that all of them were shot very, very quickly".
"It was hard to see Zack for the last time", he said.
