Discovery plans to move into its new NY headquarters in the second half of 2019, though Zaslav's memo did not indicate where it would be located.

"The media industry is rapidly evolving, increasingly global, more consumer focused and more multi-platform and Discovery must evolve with it", said David Zaslav, Discovery's president and CEO.

Zaslav said the decision to move away was "one we do not make lightly", claiming Discovery could still "remain unwavering" in its support for Maryland.

Discovery Communications was founded in Landover, Maryland in 1985.

Discovery Communications headquarters is leaving Maryland, according to a memo sent to employees Tuesday morning.

"We have made the decision to move our global headquarters to New York City".

Huge murals advertising Shark Week were installed on the building for years. "Unfortunately, the Silver Spring headquarters is filled with administrative and business positions". The transaction was expected to close early this year, Discovery said at the time of the deal.

"The pending acquisition [of Scripps] has allowed us to undertake an in-depth analysis of where we work and how we work, and the chance to create the most efficient locations for our best-in-class creative, technology, production and operating functions to thrive now, and into the future", wrote Zaslav. Discovery will maintain government relations and other functions that need to operate in the nation's capital.

Discovery's TV channels include Animal Planet, TLC, Investigation Discovery and OWN.

Discovery opened its headquarters off Georgia Avenue at Colesville Road in 2003, sparking economic development in downtown Silver Spring.
