If Oprah Winfrey decides to let Hollywood liberals' ecstatic reaction to her awards-show speech become the starting point for a presidential run, she would immediately vault to the top of a field that is now composed of a mix of grizzled political veterans (Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren) and a bunch of untested but hopeful newcomers to the national stage (Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker).
"I like Oprah. I don't think she's going to run", Trump said. He then shared his opinion that he didn't think Winfrey would run but that she "would be a lot of fun".
"I think she'd get elected as president of the Screen Actors Guild if she wanted to run - but she will never be president of the United States. I believe that she could make a difference in this country. For the first time, I am even like, 'Are you sure, are you sure?' - which only irritates her".
"I still feel Donald Trump wins in 2020, because there's really no candidate from the Democrat Party to, in fact, run against him, and certainly no issue at all that they can bring to the table". "Listen, Oprah has got a very nice life. I do think that after years of watching 'The Oprah Show, ' you always have a right to change your mind", she said. Will she run for president?
And though any Democrat can count on the support of the mainstream media that is already at war with the president, Oprah's open flattery of the press in her speech is a reminder that she will be operating with another built-in advantage that will make it even more hard for primary rivals to attack her.
The inspiring message left many of Winfrey's fans pondering whether she'll run for office in 2020.
The notion that the film and television world still has the moral standing to preach to the nation - let alone impose its presidential choice on us - is risible. "At the same time, politics is ridiculous right now".
But King did acknowledge a glimmer of hope for those dreaming of a Winfrey bid: "I do think she's intrigued by the idea".
Since then, there has been a groundswell of support for Winfrey to throw her hat in the ring - something the actress and queen of daytime talk is said to be not actively pursuing, but admits she finds intriguing.
"I have people calling me - very important names that I won't name - who said, 'I will be her campaign manager".
After two days of heightened speculation, Mr Trump said he did not think she would end up running but thought he could defeat her if she did.
"There will be no running for office of any kind for me", Winfrey said on CBS This Morning back in October of 2017, flanked by her friend King.
On the show Tuesday morning, King said she "was up talking to [Winfrey] very late last night".
