India pledges $41m in aid for Palestinians during PM visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi capped a whirlwind visit to the UAE on Sunday, giving a keynote address as guest of honour at the World Government Summit in Dubai.

India and Oman have made a decision to coordinate efforts to counter "misuse" of religion by groups and states for perpetrating acts of terror and urged the global community to take action against entities which use terrorism as an instrument of policy.

The Shiva Temple is one of the oldest temples in the Gulf region and is located near the Sultan of Oman's palace and was constructed by the merchant community from Gujarat around 125 years ago.

During the auspicious days and festivals, more than 15,000 devotees visit the temple to offer their prayers.

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi pledged $41 million of aid to the Palestinians during a meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier, addressing the Indian diaspora at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Oman's capital, Modi said the ties of India and Oman have always remained strong despite the ups and downs in the political environment in both the countries. "We believe in the importance of a possible Indian role to reach a final agreement based on global consensus and resolutions", President Abbas had suggested before Modi's visit.

The Port of Duqm is situated on the southeastern seaboard of Oman, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

In a strategic move to expand its footprint in the Indian Ocean region, India has secured access to the key Port of Duqm in Oman for military use and logistical support, top sources have told The Indian Express. Modi and Sultan Qaboos chose to promote the experiences of India and Oman in building inclusive societies as effective models in countering radicalisation.

Given the nature of the Middle East's polities, where sultans and monarchs still reign, Modi personal diplomacy has indeed had a significant impact in galvanizing bilateral relations. India's engagement with the Middle East should now focus on delivering on its commitments and strengthening its presence as an economic and security partner. Growing rivalry between Sunni Arabs and Shia Iran is reshaping old relationships.

The Prime Minister has praised the functioning of his government, but he has insulted the country by criticizing the former governments.
