Which (Oprah Winfrey), proto-Time Lord, alien/angel hybrids who travel the cosmos by folding space with their minds, are all spot in. So there's that milestone. She's looking for her father (Chris Pine) - who disappeared four years earlier while embarking on his own scientific experiment - with the guidance of three ageless, magical women (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling). He infuses his love for physics into Meg and Charles, but then he risks all when he makes a huge breakthrough - discovering "wrinkles" in time - which allow humans to transport through the universe, and he goes for it.
"A Wrinkle In Time" began its run in USA theaters on March 9. It needs to give DuVernay some well-earned box-office clout, take on the patriarchy, live up to the reputation of a treasured book and capture the spirit of a blossoming youth movement. I wish my younger self could have seen this. DuVernay takes full advantage of the limitless possibilities of computer effects and one wishes the movie had lessened the exposition and told the story using the images.
Storm Reid, as lead protagonist Meg Murry, has to carry a lot of the film on her shoulders and she delivers a strong performance.
Meg is the kind of literary heroine that book-loving girls worship. Although adopted, they prove to also be science prodigies. I saw it in 3D, and I think that added to the beauty of some of these scenes, particularly the one in which chatty crimson flowers are so wondrous to behold. They sought the banning of the book from libraries and schools because of this for fear that it would influence children. Which is meant to be the wise leader, though she's generally glued to one spot and mostly requires Meg to come to the answers herself. Less effort on hair, wardrobe and hugs and more on dialogue and originality, I say. I choose all my projects as a function of that.
"When it came to a director I knew we had to get someone that could handle the emotional side of it".
With the Murry family, Calvin is free to be his best, most-complicated self. The relationship between Meg and Calvin, a neighbor boy who comes with them on the adventure, is expanded wonderfully.
Underneath the sci-fi and fantasy elements of both the book and film of "A Wrinkle in Time", the story is quite simple: a young girl sets out to find her missing father (Chris Pine). And the same thing with my friend Gayle. Regrettably, there's very little time spent in any one place or with anyone other than the children, so it's challenging to become engaged in the narrative. On more than one occasion, each one helps the other find the strength they need to do something they never thought they could do.
The power of love can only do so much in Disney's misbegotten A Wrinkle in Time. I was in NY and I was working on Broadway and I said, 'They're gonna tap my shoulder and tell me to get out, They're gonna be like what are you doing here?' But I keep going back to that thing of saying if I'm feeling this way, all I need to do is acknowledge I'm feeling this way and take myself out of the equation.
