New Details on Clinton 911 Call

Lowe said the original 911 call was not connected, in any way, to the incident that occurred at the Clinton home and that it was a complete coincidence that the officers were called to that specific address.

New details are emerging in the death of 30-year-old Clinton Police Officer Christopher Ryan Morton. Two other police officers were injured but survived the Tuesday night shooting in Clinton, about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City.

In the 911 call that spurred the dispatch, Henry County 911 operators could hear two women arguing in the background but no one was directly speaking to operators. Neighbor Sheryl Long says officers begged Waters during the standoff to let them tend to the fallen officer. For reasons that authorities are still trying to determine, the officers were sent to the Clinton home instead of the home from where the call was made, which was about 15 miles (24 kilometers) away in Windsor.

Widger met the officers outside the home and said nothing was going on at the residence. His cousin, John Rudolph, told KCTV that Waters was troubled and had "mental issues", and that despite his criminal history, he managed to get guns. The suspect was later found dead. The officers chose to check inside anyway to make sure no one was in danger. Morton, who sounds out of breath, tells dispatchers he's in a back room of the home.

Seven months ago, officer Gary Michael was shot dead during a traffic stop. Kasper was released Wednesday from a local hospital, and Bettencourt on Thursday was in stable condition, recovering from his wounds and surgery at a hospital in Kansas City, according to the highway patrol.

"It's just another tragic event for this community and especially this police department", Lowe said.

James Waters' daughter, Lakeviona Waters, told the newspaper that "she wishes she could apologize to Morton's family for her father's actions".

Morton, a twice-deployed veteran who joined the Army National Guard in 2005, took a temporary break from full-time policing past year to take a job with Veterans Affairs in the Kansas City area, although he remained a reserve officer in Clinton. "I don't think he would've did it". Online court records don't list an attorney for Widger, who is being held on a $25,000 bond.

The body of slain Clinton police officer Christopher Ryan Morton will be escorted from Kansas City to Clinton on Friday.

"At this point, there's really no clear correlation" between the shooting and Widger's alleged drug distribution, Shields added.
