While talking to IndianExpress.com, Sudeep Mehta, Owner of the Tree House Resorts said, "Akshay Kumar who is our Chief Naturalist during a routine forest drive witnessed this incident and took pictures and shot the video".
The tiger was identified as Matkasur, a 7-year-old dominant male in the park.
The sloth bear, a female, was headed to the water body with her young cub in search of water when the tiger, which was cooling off in the water, attacked.
Both the tiger and sloth bear appeared to suffer injuries. The only thing that apparently saved the mother bear here was her thick fur, which made it very hard for the tiger to get a grip.
"The tiger attacked the bear more than five minutes". The distressed cub roared as its mother took on the tiger. The frightened cub was seen howling. It can even be seen charging after the tiger. Not one to be intimidated, the bear charged at the predator, baring her fangs. The next few tense minutes see both the tiger and the sloth bear viciously charge at each other trying to assert their dominance.
The tiger again seems to have overpowered the bear, and digs his teeth into the animal's neck as she struggles to break free. The sloth bear tries desperately to escape the tiger's grip. "The tiger was roaring, it was a severe fight".
Kumar said that normally, sloth bear - as their name suggests - are slow creatures, can't run very fast and often prove to be easy prey for the big cats lurking in the forests. "They can't outrun tigers", he said, according to the report.
