Now the Cavaliers face a new challenge: trying to earn a spot in their first Final Four in more than three decades as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. UNC was led by the 2018 ACC most improved player Luke Maye, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds Friday night.

Rick Barnes is heading back to where he spent a good chunk of his career.

Since 2012, a Tobacco Road team has won the ACC Championship just twice but has been in it every time.

The better team got the victory, leaving UNC to return to Chapel Hill and regroup.

"Yeah, our a shot goes up and [we] get a defensive rebound", coach Tony Bennett said of his defense-oriented team after beating defending national champion North Carolina in the final at Barclays Center late Saturday.

Their ACC title win over North Carolina was another example of little flash, but plenty of finish.

Villanova, Kansas and Xavier were named the tournament's other No. 1 seeds.

It was the school's third ACC tournament win, it's second in this decade.

In 2014, they lost to a Michigan State in the Sweet 16. Those three have combined for 39 Final Four appearances.

No. 11 WICHITA STATE 89, TEMPLE 81:Landry Shamet scored 24 points, Rashard Kelly had 16 and Wichita State (25-6) beat Temple in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament.

Top-seeded Cincinnati (29-4) advances to a championship-game matchup with Houston.

Syracuse was the last team into the field.

UVA, Virginia Tech, Radford, North Carolina State, UNC, Duke, North Carolina Central, Davidson and UNC Greensboro are the nine teams that made it into the field of 68, with the Cavilers leading the field as the top seed in the tournament. "I think we're much better prepared for the NCAA Tournament than we were a month ago, and these two games will help us, even though we lost (Friday night) and could have played better".

Among the intriguing early matchups is No. 8 seed Creighton and its star, Marcus Foster, against ninth-seeded Kansas State.

Duke Blue Devils forward Marvin Bagley III (35) drives with the ball against Notre Dame Fighting Irish forward Bonzie Colson (35) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish guard Rex Pflueger (0). "We just played the No. 1 team in the country and we had them but didn't get it done".

From there, the game turned into a back-and-forth prizefight: Kansas scored 10 straight, West Virginia answered with eight in a row and the Jayhawks responded with 10 more. The Cowboys also lost an assistant coach in the Federal Bureau of Investigation scandal.

Boeheim talked about relying too heavily on four freshmen and Paschal Chukwu, a junior, who has "never played a whole season". They have accomplished two-thirds of the goals they set when the season began.

Saint Mary's lacked high-quality victories, but it's tough on a West Coast Conference team to get those opportunities.

WASHINGTON - Andre Berry scored 18 points, Fatts Russell made two crucial 3-pointers in the final six minutes and Rhode Island rallied past Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinals. It became clear before conference play, and then dreadfully so during most of February and March, that the Orange did not possess enough offensive talent to compete against the best teams in the nation's best conference.
