Tillerson speaks with Pompeo as State Dept. plans for transition

Whether Mr Trump is acting wisely is a matter of division and debate.

The former ExxonMobil chief had a series of public rifts with the White House after being appointed a year ago.

Tillerson was the second cabinet secretary fired in the first 15 months of the administration, and if CIA Director Mike Pompeo does replace him, five cabinet-level posts will have turned over already.

Mr Trump also named Gina Haspel to become the CIA's first female director. But he said the State Department was "in good hands" with its interim chief, Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan. "Continuing on their current trajectory is likely to lead to greater isolation on their part, a situation which is not in anyone's interest". Tillerson was working with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to slow-walk the delivery of military options to the president, apparently out of fear that the president might actually act on them. It is possible that anything agreed by Rex Tillerson during his discussions with Mrs Johnson Smith and Prime Minister Holness would not have registered in a State Department denuded of its best talent. He said, "We all agree that USA leadership starts with diplomacy", when Trump is dedicated to the militarization of American foreign policy.

More recently, Pompeo has been urging Trump to explore toughening up the Iran nuclear deal rather than simply tearing it up. The former Central Intelligence Agency director has underscored the need to press North Korea on President Trump's aim for denuclearization and has advocated regime change and military action over dialogue. "The connections between the United States and the Australian government are very deep and enduring ... the connections will continue". And, Kelly was reportedly part of a "suicide pact" with Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis - that if one left or was sacked, they would all leave.

The White House insists Mr Tillerson received a phone call on Friday from Chief of Staff John Kelly, who told him that he was being let go.

Mr Tillerson had just returned from a shortened trip to Africa hours before Mr Trump's announcement.

The top USA diplomat's team said he felt unwell on Saturday and made a decision to cut short his tour by a day.

I can't believe someone hasn't suggested this already, or maybe they did and I missed it, but someone should make Donald Trump sit down and
watch, non-stop, every episode of all seven series of the United States drama The West Wing in the hope that it will teach him how the White House should be run and what it means to be truly presidential because, on current form, he clearly has no idea.

Pompeo considers Russia's involvement in the 2016 US presidential election insignificant, saying that Russian Federation has been interfering in various USA elections for decades. While Trump regularly undercut and even mocked Tillerson by publicly contradicting him on issues such as relations with Qatar and North Korea (Trump famously tweeted that Tillerson was "wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man"), Pompeo is more likely to be seen overseas as having the confidence of the president and will therefore be more effective as secretary state. After this statement was released Mr Goldstein himself was sacked by the White House. The CIA director no doubt was fully apprised of South Korea's outreach to the North, and of Kim's offer to meet with Trump. "Knew that the relationship was not flawless".

Mr Donald Trump is learning to work the presidency.

The career of a one-time giant of corporate America had come to an ignominious end.

"It is no exaggeration to say that the men and women representing our nation are among the most talented, dedicated, and patriotic Americans in public service", he wrote.
