The comedy star and Saturday Night Live standout will portray the DC comics villain Cheetah. The Hollywood Reporter reported in February that Wiig was in talks to play the character.
Director Patty Jenkins confirmed the news on Twitter and said she 'can't wait to finally work with one of my favourites'. As of this writing, the specific plot details are unclear - though given how far away the film is (around 2 years), it makes sense.
The character, a feline-esque adversary with super strength and speed, was first introduced in Wonder Woman No. 6 in 1943.
"SO excited by what we have planned."".
While there have been no fewer than four different characters who have been called Cheetah in Wonder Woman's history, the version we'll see on screen is the most important one: Barbara Ann Minerva, a good-hearted archaeologist who unwittingly sells her soul to the god Urtzkartaga.
It's also worth pointing out that Patty trounced the likes of Justice League and Suicide Squad at the box office with her first comic book outing, and is widely regarded to have created the best DCEU film to date by critics.
Wiig starred for seven seasons on NBC's SNL, where she was a regular from 2005-12. The sequel is expected to arrive November 1, 2019.
