Though Amazon's growth has been well-documented in the last several years, Best Buy has also had a surprising amount of success on Wall Street with the company more than doubling its share price in the past two years.
Amazon and Best Buy want to sell you your next smart TV.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly revealed the partnership on Tuesday at a Best Buy store in Bellevue, Wash. "It's not a zero-sum game". The new TVs will be coming to Canada later this year, the companies said.
Details on the financial end of the BBY-AMZN deal weren't disclosed. One thing these new TVs will feature is Alexa integration, for you smart home buffs out there. Plus, this brings Alexa to the fore - you can carry out voice searches for content regardless of whether it's through a live broadcast or a streaming service, such as Prime Video, Netflix, or Hulu.
Amazon and Best Buy were once mortal enemies.
We at Best Buy work hard every day to enrich the lives of consumers through technology, whether they come to us online, visit our stores or invite us into their home. The new range at Best Buy expands its distribution and adds to the existing Fire TV range of set-top boxes and dongles. The products will be available in the USA and Canada starting this summer.
The Fire TVs can also be paired with Amazon's Echo smart speaker so people can use the Alexa voice assistant as a hands-free remote.
The two retailers, which are usually considered rivals in the electronics space, will collaborate to sell Amazon Fire-enabled TVs. Additionally, the retailer has a partnership with Roku for Insignia TVs powered by the company's own smart TV operating system. "In this iteration, Best Buy gets new devices that will drive foot traffic into its stores, and Amazon gets a brick-and-mortar showroom for more of its proprietary products".
