Konami revealed on Tuesday that it is developing a new smartphone game in the Castlevania series titled Akumajō Dracula Grimoire of Souls (Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls).

Of course, this is Konami we're talking about here, so there's bound to be catch: Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls is slated to be an iOS-exclusive title. It marks the first 2D Castlevania game since 2010's Harmony of Despair, and like that entry it has a focus on online co-op.

The game will also introduce new characters to the game and while there is no mention, it appears that it could be a free-to-play title with the possibility of microtransactions, which in today's mobile gaming landscape hardly comes as a surprise.

Now the company has announced a new project, this time in the long-running Castlevania franchise.

However like we said the game's initial launch seems to be in Japan with no mention on whether we might be able to expect it stateside. However, the protagonist receives a letter that marked the end of the peaceful era. Grimoire of Souls is a side-scrolling action game with a cooperative mode and boss rush for up to four players, as well as a competitive mode that pits four against four.

In order to verify the meaning of the words written in the letter-"The Grimoire has run wild and Count Dracula will be resurrected"-Genya Arikado heads off towards the letter's sender..." Strengthen your favorite characters and challenge your mighty enemies to stand! He's from a top-secret Japanese agency with a secret identity of his own.

Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls will feature real-time co-op with other players from around the world. He is the only person who has the power to fight against Dracula, but this is only known to a select few people. Although she is young, her skill as a researcher of magic is considerable, and she supports Arika through her studies.
