According to Deadline, the production studio is likely to employ its first-ever female Asian-American director for the film: Cathy Yan. She made her feature film debut with this year's Dead Pigs, which screened at Sundance and won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Acting at the 2018 festival. That, plus Robbie's supposed insistence that she wanted to work with a female director on the film, led Warner Bros.to tap Yan.

The girl gang movie is being written by screenwriter Christina Hodson, and it will be produced by Robbie, Kroll & Co Entertainment's Sue Kroll, and Clubhouse Pictures' Bryan Unkeless.

The trade adds that the project will be based on Birds of Prey, which in the DC universe teams Quinn with several other crime fighters, namely Black Canary, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and Huntress, though Deadline adds that it is not confirmed if all of them will be characters in the film. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the DC slate as we learn it.

There are a lot of Harley Quinn-centric films in development, as Robbie herself has said. Hodson is also writing "Batgirl" for DC. That includes the Suicide Squad sequel to be directed by Gavin O'Connor.

Much like Jenkins, Yan has only one indie movie on her resume. She wrote and directed numerous short films before stepping up to features with Dead Pigs.

This won't be the film based on Gotham City Sirens, or the Harley vs. Joker film, or Suicide Squad 2. As authorities struggle to explain the phenomenon, characters intersect.
