Kathua rape and murder: BJP ministers exit Jammu and Kashmir government

BJP state chief Sat Sharma received the resignations of both the ministers on Sunday morning, who forwarded them to Mufti, who later, accepted the resignations and passed them on to the state governor for further action.

Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chandra Prakash Ganga resigned amid outrage over their support for the men accused of raping and murdering the 8-year-old girl in Kathua.

In a bid to save the alliance, Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary Ram Madhav rushed to Jammu and chaired a legislature meet at the party headquarters. These two ministers had gone to pacify the people, but subsequently, their presence was mistaken for trying to shield the accused. A much-relieved Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for defusing the situation and said the unfortunate incident had brought the people of the state and the rest of the country "together".

Meanwhile, the uncle of the victim alleged that Sengar's brother Atul, who is lodged in Unnao jail, is issuing threats to the villagers asking them not to speak to police against him or his brother either. CBI sources said Shashi too has claimed that she was in Kanpur with her husband on the day of the rape. They made the two ministers resign.

"Naari Virodhi (anti-woman) Adityanath has not only utterly failed in his constitutional duties as the Chief Minister and abused the oath of office but also played an important protagonist in safeguarding the interests of the rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar", he added.

Singh is believed to have led the victim to Sengar's residence, where the alleged crime took place.

The victim went missing while grazing horses in Rasana village of Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua on January 17.

The senior BJP leader admitted that the two ministers displayed lack of discretion by taking part in the rally, but made it clear that there was no attempt to sabotage the investigations as charged by the Congress party. Madhav accused the Congress party of playing double standards.

On the plea for a CBI probe saying the investigations have been completed in three months and a charge sheet has been submitted in the court.

Asked about the demand for a CBI probe into the incident, the BJP leader said: "It is now for the court to decide".
