Srikanth was the first Indian to win four SuperSeries world tour titles in a year in 2017, earning him crucial ranking points over close competitor Axelsen who is recovering from a foot injury. Srikanth's rise coincided with Axelsen's injury lay-off as the Danish star, forced to spend time off the court, slipped one place to second spot after failing to defend his Malaysia Open title that he had clinched in April previous year.
Kidambi Srikanth displaced Viktor Axelsen at the top position in BWF Rankings.
"This is a huge achievement for Srikanth as well as for Indian badminton", Gopichand said. Srikanth has now joined Saina Nehwal to become only the second Indian to achieve the feat.
Indian badminton sensation Kidambi Srikanth grabbed the title of World No. 1 player on Thursday.
"It's been a great year, but I have many more goals, and right now, my focus is on coming good at the big events and achieving many more milestones".
Srikanth, coached by Gopichand, is now the top seed at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. Srikanth, who comes out of the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy, has seen tremendous success in the past two years. "The Commonwealth Games is on, and this year also holds the Asian Games", the 25-year-old said.
Srikanth bagged the mixed team gold in the ongoing Gold Coast Games and continues to feature in the men's singles format in that event. With this win, he also improved his ranking from third spot and became world number one. With four Super Series titles (Indonesia, Australia, Denmark and France) a year ago Shrikanth achieved his career best ranking of World No. 2 in November. He is the fourth badminton player in the world to achieve the feat.
