65th National Awards: Sridevi wins for 'Mom', regional cinema scores big

The jury of the renowned 65th National Film Awards is headed by veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur while the panel has as many as ten members who screen the best of Indian cinema.

With the list of 65th National Film Award announced on Friday, namma Sandalwood film industry has bagged at least two national awards for Best Kannada Film and Best lyrics.

The statement read, "We are overjoyed to know that the Jury has conferred the Best Actor Award to Sridevi for her performance in Mom".

Pankaj Tripathi gets special mention for his performance in Newton.

Thondimuthalam Driksakshiyum won the Best Malayalam Film Award and the award for the Best Screenplay (Sanjeev Pazhoor). Kapur said that giving awards also means that those films are meant to be seen and that it is important to not go by the words of film critics as they are more or less prejudiced. While Boney Kapoor and the actress' other family members are trying to recoup her loss, the news of her last film being celebrated at National Awards definitely has arrived as a breath of fresh air. "You can't really decide how people will respond to your film as it's an artform that can be interpreted and appreciated differently". We don't know if we should laugh with joy or cry in her memory. "Tolet", directed by Chezhiyan won the Best Film in Tamil. I had no idea I was even in the running... All credit to my team for the hard work they put in. But director Shekhar Kapoor was not happy with this announcement. It's a very special moment for all of us.
