Host Seth Meyers during the monologue, October 31, 2017. The couple narrowly made it, and at the time, they thought it would be the most intense birth experience they would endure.
The couple's first child nearly arrived before the couple got the hospital, so Meyers said he thought his wife was overreacting.
The NBC late-night host said they named their new son Axel because it's a name they like, but will tell him it's because firemen helped deliver him and, if he puts up a fuss, will remind him "you could have been "Hose".
With the baby already crowning, Meyers and his wife headed back towards the center of the lobby and prepared to give birth on the floor. I'm going to have the baby right now. "The baby is coming, '" he noted.
Meyers then thanked his wife "who obviously has to get an apartment closer to the hospital", describing how calm she remained during the lobby birth. "But I figured we had plenty of time to get to the hospital". "I looked at my wife". "I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I basically said, 'We're about to have a baby.we're having a baby.we had a baby, '" he explained. "It was like somebody was trying to sneak the baby on a plane". Meyers thanked them and his neighbors, who had warmed up towels in a dryer to keep Axel warm. The comic went on to thank numerous people, including his neighbors in a building he had moved into only late past year.
He also showed off a photo of the birth, which showed his wife lying on the ground holding their son to her chest as emergency personnel held an oxygen mask to her mouth.
Meyers began his opening segment by recalling that his first son was almost born in an Uber two-years prior, before joking, "Move over that story, because that's so normal compared to what happened yesterday". The little boy's middle name was picked for Alexi's grandparents who were Holocaust survivors who met the day after they were liberated.
