An audio clip of Nirmala Devi trying to persuade her pupils to gratify sexual urges of high ranking officials of the university had gone viral on Sunday leading to college authorities placing her under suspension.

Following a report submitted by the Madurai Kamaraj University over the matter, Governor Banwarilal Purohit, also the Chancellor of state run universities in the state on Monday announced a "high powered inquiry" by retired IAS officer R.Santhanam. "It is important to inquire into such matters immediately and without prejudice so that the guilty do not escape without punishment". Now an opportunity is awaiting them to go to the next level, implying prostitution. The college is affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University. "I can assure you can scale great heights because they are high-ranking officials of the Madurai Kamaraj University".

"For doing something successfully, they (the officials) are expecting college students for certain things".

As the issue led to an outrage with the lecturer's remarks being perceived as suggestion of sexual favour, the Tamil Nadu government and opposition parties lashed out at her. The teacher said she thought of the assignment because the hookup culture has become so dominant these days that not many people invest time in going on a proper date and spend time with each other. When the girls tell her not to talk about this again, Ms. Nirmala Devi seeks an assurance from them that they will not reveal about the conversation to anyone.

S Subbaraju, general secretary of (MUTA) Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers' Association endorsed the demand of DMK leader since the CBI can not be relied and high court's supervision is necessary.

"Dating takes social courage and we need to teach our young people the virtue of social courage", Cronin said in a statement. An official of the college said she was suspended after they received a complaint from students on March 19.

Senior AIADMK leader and Minister D Jayakumar assured severe punishment under the law for the professor for luring the students into flesh trade.
