The Heat: Summit of the Americas

Advice sent into this press by Pence's office said the vice president will attend a Friday feast hosted by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

During his speech at the 8th Summit of the Americas on Friday, Vizcarra invited the 20 heads of State and Government of the continent to 'work together and make concrete commitments against corruption'.

Pence told Pena Nieto he looked forward to discussing the North American Free Trade Agreement and a "broad range of issues". "If preferred means lowering trade barriers, Trump is the opposite of that". He also assailed the United States as the biggest threat to world peace and democracy.

The vice president is to sit down with several Latin American leaders, including Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra and Argentine President Mauricio Macri.

Trump had been scheduled to attend the Americas summit but decided this week to send Pence instead so he could remain in the United States to focus on formulating a US response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria last weekend.

Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump directed the deployment of National Guard troops to the U.S. -Mexico border to combat illegal migration and drug smuggling.

Vice President Mike Pence in prepared remarks to regional leaders at the Summit of America twice recalled traveling to the border with Venezuela during a trip previous year to Colombia. The White House said Pence will reassure allies of the U.S. administration's commitment to the region.

In meetings with Latin American leaders, Pence is expected to promote good governance and democratic institutions, and urge allies to maintain pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Erika de la Garza with the Latin America Initiative at Rice University, called Trump's absence at the summit "regrettable".

It will be the first meeting between the two leaders.

"No one wants to do bilateral trade deals with the United States, and Trump had no Plan B", said Robert Manning, an Asia expert and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

The region also came under a cloud of malaise linked to a massive political bribery scheme with the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht at the center.

After noting that the theme of this year's Summit of the Americas is stopping corruption, the Granma journalist asked Rubio if he would continue accepting money from the NRA after the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

When pressed again by the reporter to answer his question, Rubio said he was glad they could have a discussion, "because in Cuba we can't have a debate".

It will be Pence's second trip to the region - he travelled to Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Panama last August.

On Friday, Mexico's Enrique Pena Nieto told the CEOs that the U.S.is welcome to "eventually reconsider its decision and take advantage of the opportunity to be part of the TPP".
