Trainer Freddie Roach "hurt" after split from Manny Pacquiao

Freddie Roach 'hurt' by Manny Pacquiao snub after split

Pacquiao disclosed his decision Friday, April 13, 2018, in the final sentence of a news release detailing his plans for his upcoming fight against Lucas Matthysse.

Boxing had been buzzing over rumors of a Pacquiao-Roach break recently, but the press release from late last week appeared to make things official.

"Manny and I had a great run for 15 years - longer than most marriages and certainly a rarity for boxing", said Roach.

However in recent days various reports have suggested that Pacquiao will do so without the help of Freddie Roach.

"I would be lying if I didn't say I wasn't hurt that he didn't contact me personally about his decision, but the great times we enjoyed together far outweigh that", Roach said in a brief statement on Friday.

All in all, the 16 years of Roach and Pacquiao oversaw 34 fights that led to unprecedented success - but it has finally come to an end. "If Buboy can get a stable of boxers out of this no hard feelings to Freddie, but Manny has not made a final decision".

But Pacquiao went on social media Monday to say that he would make a decision later this week on his corner team for the Kuala Lumpur fight with the Argentine World Boxing Association welterweight champion. He now holds a record of 59 wins off 38 knockouts and a seven-loss slate. Neri also is a longtime friend and occasional cook for Pacquiao, who typically kept a huge entourage of Filipino friends around him during his months in California. Sunday's tweet, however, made clear that "my (Pacquiao's) advisor Mike Koncz has been in contact with Freddie's people to keep them informed".

"I will forever be grateful to be associated with what these two achieved", he said.

After the fight, promoter Bob Arum and Koncz lambasted Roach for not taking aggressive action to counter the referee's giving Horn the freedom to fight his rough style during the bout, adding that "the corner direction to Pacquiao seemed lacking".

And he insists the show will be Malaysia's biggest since Ali fought Joe Bugner, in Kuala Lumpur, back in 1975.
