Trump called Comey an "untruthful slime ball" and said it was his "great honor" to fire the veteran Justice Department prosecutor.

Since then, the two have gone back and forth in the media, culminating recently in the publishing of Comey's tell-all memoir, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership".

He seized on an excerpt shown Saturday in which Comey said his belief that Clinton would beat Trump in the 2016 presidential election was probably a factor in his decision to disclose the investigation into her emails. Many believe his reopening of the FBI's inquiry into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as Secretary of State barely a week before the election, while making no mention of the active inquiry into Mr Trump and Russian Federation, swung the election to Mr Trump.

"Comey drafted the Crooked Hillary exoneration long before he talked to her (lied in Congress to Senator G), then based his decisions on her poll numbers", he tweeted.

Though Comey did not vote in the election, he said he privately supported Clinton, as did his wife and four daughters.

"These are more words I never thought I'd utter about a president of the United States, but it's possible", Mr Comey told ABC News. It offers Comey's version of the investigation on Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State.

At the same time, Rogers thinks Comey took the bait, and he was thinking with emotions over the situation with Trump.

Comey's book tells about the FBI investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

Oh, and don't forget that Comey in May 2017 essentially stage-managed the disclosure of a memo detailing how Trump had suggested that he drop an investigation into departed national security adviser Michael Flynn. One of those viewers may well have been President Trump.

He said Sessions responded by not meeting his gaze, darting his eyes around, and letting Comey know he was on his own. You know you're in unusual waters when the Republican National Committee dedicates a section of its web site to "Lyin Comey", a piling on of anti-Comey criticism, before the book is even officially released.

The Trump administration, with the support of the Republican National Committee, has mounted a campaign to discredit Comey amid the release of his book.

In fact, more tangential stories like Comey's revelation that the White House chief of staff John Kelly called the president's firing of Comey "dishonorable" could have "the potential to actually affect some staffing decisions and policies", said Markay.

The revelation came during Comey's interview with USA Today. He's a very smart man and a lawyer, ' said Comey, who went out of his way to gush about Obama in his new book, 'A Higher Loyalty'. "He strikes me as a person of above average intelligence who's tracking conversations and knows what's going on", Comey said.

In the interview excerpt released Saturday, Comey said he did not remember "consciously thinking" about the election results as he chose to disclose that the FBI had reopened its investigation into candidate Clinton's email use.

"There's something more important than that that should unite all of us, and that is our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country", Comey said."The most important being truth. This president is not able to do that".

Donald Trump lashed out at James Comey on Monday again following an explosive TV interview in which the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director labeled the president "morally unfit" for office.
