President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, negotiated a $1.6 million payment to a former Playboy model who says a top Republican fundraiser named Elliott Broidy got her pregnant, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Broidy, a deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee and Los Angeles-based venture capitalist, admitted to having a relationship with the mystery woman. He represented Clifford in her 2016 deal with Cohen, and also negotiated a separate payment between Playboy model Karen McDougal and the publisher of the National Enquirer about her alleged affair with Trump.
Broidy in a statement to the Wall Street Journal confirmed the affair with the unnamed woman and that the woman informed him she had become pregnant. "She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy, and I offered to help her financially during this hard period", Broidy said in a statement following both reports.
"She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this hard period", he said in a statement to the Journal. It uses the same pseudonyms for Broidy and the woman who says she was impregnated, David Dennison and Peggy Peterson, that he used for Trump and Daniels, the Journal reported.
"Mr. Cohen reached out to me after being contacted by this woman's attorney, Keith Davidson", Broidy said.
Cohen's property was raided earlier this week by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents said to be looking into allegations of bank fraud, wire fraud, and campaign finance law violations.
Cohen and Broidy became close through their work together on Trump's presidential campaign in 2016 and with the RNC.
An attorney for Cohen did not return requests for comment Friday.
"It is unfortunate that this personal matter between two consenting adults is the subject of national discussion just because of Michael Cohen's involvement", Broidy said in the statement.
Broidy, an investor, already was in the sights of the special prosecutor, Robert Mueller, because of his relationship with George Nader, a businessman who serves as an adviser to the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahya.
So far this cycle, Broidy and his wife have contributed $614,000 to Republican campaign committees and the RNC, records show. "We have not spoken since that time".
Cohen set up the deal in late 2017, said sources familiar with the matter.
Both The White House and Cohen have denied that Trump had an affair with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. Cohen, Daniels and Davidson signed the agreement. The FBI raids also sought information that included payments allegedly made to keep women silent about affairs with Trump more than a decade ago.
McDougal has sued to break free of her contract so she can speak freely, arguing that her story about Trump is "core political speech entitled to the highest protection under the law".
