Cleveland's selection of polarizing Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick was a major surprise, and the Browns followed with another shocker, taking Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward at No. 4 - several slots higher than most mock drafts predicted. That made sense too. The team willing to include its first-rounder next year said to Dorsey before the draft began: "I'm coming up for one player and one player only, and that's Baker Mayfield".
Jackson anointed Tyrod Taylor his starter as the Browns want to bring Mayfield along slowly.
"I know exactly what they said, and exactly why they said that", Mayfield said, via quotes distributed by the team.
"That's a veteran that's been in the league, that's a guy I can learn from", he said. "I've grown up. I can be honest about my mistakes", Mayfield said. For me, moving forward, it is just being myself.
Mayfield, 23, also raised eyebrows last season by planting a flag on the field after a victory at Ohio State and grabbing his crotch while directing expletives toward his opponents from the sideline at Kansas.
"A guy that is very physical, very tough", Jackson said. Thursday, Dorsey said the team's dive into Mayfield's background was so extensive he knows what Mayfield ordered at the food truck prior to the arrest. "To me, that is going to take care of the rest".
"Working him out and spending that time in Norman and watching him with his teammates and how he throws the football (convinced me)", Jackson continued.
Like Manziel, Mayfield is just over six feet tall. "He is fine. I have no problems with him". "It's about winning and the mentality and leadership quality".
Operating nearly exclusively out of shotgun in three seasons at Oklahoma, Mayfield completed 69.8 percent of his passes for 12,292 yards and 119 touchdowns with 21 interceptions and rushed for 18 touchdowns.
