The community has shown his family an outpouring of support, and it continued on Monday when Pitts' 5-year-old son Dakota returned to school, WTHI reports.

Rob Pitts was a 16-year veteran of the department, and Dakota wore his dad's police badge around his neck to school.

"He will definitely know that his dad was a hero", she told Fox6. "Blood doesn't always make family, and I think the blue family just went above and beyond".

He waves to someone off camera before he is presented with a shirt and badge from another Terre Haute police officer.

"Welcome back to school, bud", one of the officers says.

Officer Pitts, 45, was killed during a shootout with a homicide suspect on Friday, May 4.

"Dakota thought a lot of his father being a police officer".

Officer Pitts was one of four officers who were fired on when they approached a murder suspect at an apartment complex on May 4.

Upon his arrival, Dakota discovered 70 Terre Haute police officers and Vigo County sheriff's deputies waiting to welcome him to school.

When he arrived, the schoolboy was met with around 70 police officers who turned out to support him.
