For the Warriors, it makes sense for them to get a contract extension done now, instead of waiting until he becomes a free agent, and the max contract will be a lot more.
The Warriors have now reached the Western Conference Finals for the fourth year in a row in large part to what Curry, Green, and Thompson have managed to do on the court, with Durant contributing towards the success over the past two season as well.
If the Warriors waited for him to hit the open market after next season, the number would skyrocket.
"So you have one of your other star players saying "I'm not going to take a discount because I've earned this money". Add the $18.9 million he is due to make in 2018-19 and Thompson is looking at a maximum five-year salary of $121 million should he sign an extension.
It would supposedly see him sign a four-year deal worth $92million, nearly $50m less than what he would get if he signed for another team in free agency in 2019.
He said back in February to Mark Medina of The Mercury News: "Playing for one team your whole career is definitely special. Hopefully it all works out".
As Thompson has continually stated, he has no real interest in free agency and leaving the only National Basketball Association team he's played for.
