Melania Trump 'Doing Very Well' Following Kidney Surgery, President Says

Kidney embolization: What was Melania Trump's surgery for?

Trump says first lady doing 'really well,' will leave hospital in days

First lady Melania Trump underwent a procedure Monday morning to treat a benign kidney condition and will likely be hospitalized for the rest of the week, the White House said.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn responded to reports about Mrs. Trump's procedure, saying, "No one believes Trump & Melania have a real marriage anymore. Thank you for so much love and support!" his tweet read.

He published an update on his Twitter feed.

She underwent renal artery embolization at Walter Reed on Monday and is expected to stay there for the rest of the week. The president visited her in the evening and tweeted that the procedure was "successful" and that she was in "good spirits".

Such a procedure is typically performed to cut off blood supply to a tumor, aneurysm or abnormal growth, typically growing in the kidney or liver, to shrink it. Vice President Mike Pence, however, described the procedure as "long planned" during a speech Monday night in Washington.

The 48-year-old first lady had an "embolization" procedure Monday at a military hospital outside Washington.

Most of the time, these benign tumors are found when people undergo medical scans for another reason, but sometimes people have pain or other symptoms, Kowalczyk said.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the first lady, while President Trump's approval rating is often 50 percent or less. Mrs. Trump also represented the administration at the April funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush.

Last month, she took the lead in planning the first state dinner of the Trump administration, welcoming French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, to celebrate almost 250 years of U.S. Separately, a former Playboy model has revived her allegations of a 10-month affair with Trump, also in 2006.

Moreover, word of the diagnosis and the planned surgical procedure never leaked out of a White House defined by constant leaks.
