Lead designer Jeff Kaplan and his merry crew have released a new developer update in which they reveal that Overwatch has now been played by over 40 million people, meaning that the number has increased by five million since last October.
Beginning on May 22nd, a large event will take place to celebrate Overwatch's two year anniversary. Kaplan took that moment to drop the detail about the lofty new player count that includes more than 40 million active players. Don't miss out if you do not own the game yet!
"Petra is lovely. There are some really fun gameplay elements to it as well", Kaplan continued. "We think you'll find that very fun". Considering everything that will be on the table during the team-based shooter's Anniversary event, it definitely seems like a good time to be an Overwatch fan.
For this free weekend, we're making Overwatch's full roster of 27 heroes and 18 maps available for play in a variety of modes, including Quick Play, Custom Games, and the Arcade. The developer update highlights, new free-for-all deathmatch map: PETRA, free-for-all competitive deathmatch season, a free Legendary Anniversary Loot Box, new Anniversary cosmetics and more. With these loot boxes, players can get items that were left behind in the Summer Games and other Overwatch events. Included is a range of new content such as over 50 cosmetic items, a new death match map, and all previous seasonal cosmetic items.
The Legendary Edition will be released on May 22nd, the same date as the Anniversary in-game event begins.
