Starting today... Panera is expanding its delivery service adding more St. Louis locations.

The bakery company will now start to deliver to the New Haven and Hartford areas.

Panera Bread has expanded delivery across the United States with the service now available in 897 cities and 43 states.

"It's not in just a few test markets". Digital orders now account for 30 percent of Panera's sales, so it clearly sees plenty of room to expand its delivery foothold.

And, perhaps not surprisingly, it turns out Panera's CEO, Blaine Hurst, was formerly an executive at Papa John's.

He "helped the pizza chain launch online ordering in the late 1990s", as Bloomberg put it, and says that 80 percent of customers who order online for delivery from Panera would not have come into the store otherwise. Panera doesn't deploy third-party platforms for delivery. The chain will offer delivery of its entire lunch and dinner menu, though it requires a $5 minimum order and a $3 delivery fee.

In Northwest Indiana, Panera Bread restaurants in Munster, Schererville, Merrrillville, Portage and Valparaiso will deliver to people's homes and offices between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. seven days a week.
