At Toro Rosso, F2 driver Sean Gelael will get behind the wheel of an F1 challenger again before Pierre Gasly - who suffered an unfortunate lap-one collision in Sunday's Barcelona race - takes his seat.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Mercedes got the commanding victory it had been seeking all season.

Speaking after his deserved victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton told The Times: "I said I wanted to come and win in the way that I won, I was just glad I did it as planned".

McLaren have opted for 2018 driver Stoffel Vandoorne to begin their testing session, before Formula 2 championship leader Lando Norris gets his third taste of the team's F1 auto - he tested for the Woking squad in both Hungary and Abu Dhabi last season.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reportedly thrown a lifeline for Daniel Ricciardo at German team. But it's nearly all sorted and we'll pick it up at the right time, ' added the Austrian.

"But we know as well that this was a good circuit for us and the temperatures fell in our favour as well".

After three races in which driver and the team have struggled to unlock performance from tyres and vehicle, Mercedes finally had the platform required at the Circuit de Catalunya.

While a podium is always a good outcome, it doesn't make up for the win that Bottas lost out on in Baku when he suffered a late puncture while leading the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The four-time world champion and Mercedes have been talking about a lucrative new deal since a year ago, with regular assurances that it is on the point of being signed.

At the start, Hamilton took the lead from pole position and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) moved to P2 after overtaking Bottas into Turn 1. Since the first race at the Circuit de Catalunya in 1991, 25 out of the 28 races have been won from the front row. The street circuit demands setups that work well on slow corners, traditionally a strength for Ferrari and Red Bull. Everything is ok. We've just had other priorities in recent weeks. Outscoring his Ferrari rival by nine more points at the next race in Monaco will give Hamilton such a commanding margin in the championship that he could remain in the lead even if Vettel wins the following race and he fails to finish.

By his statements, Wolff was referring to Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. "So we need to keep working hard and believe in our ability to improve things".

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who now trails Hamilton by 17 points in the drivers' standings, was only fourth after a change in strategy didn't pay off. The Ferrari driver led the title bid in style two races ago, and slipping back appears to have brought out his kamikaze side.

"It was a rejuvenating experience", Hamilton said. "It's really important that we all continue to push and work as hard as we have done during this first part of the season".
