And yet, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's win in New York's 14th Congressional district primary is nothing short of incredible.

"A Democrat who takes corporate money, profits off foreclosure, doesn't live here, doesn't send his kids to our schools, doesn't drink our water or breathe our air can not possibly represent us", Ocasio-Cortez says as the video shows her riding the subway, speaking at a local event, and walking through the district.

He had raised over US$3 million for his campaign, 10 times the amount raised by Ocasio-Cortez, who rejected corporate sponsors and relied on small donors. "We must again invest in the development, manufacturing, deployment, and distribution of energy, but this time green energy", she said.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

He was unseated by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist who is nearly half his age and was a volunteer to Senator Bernie Sanders campaign. She eventually polled 58 per cent to Crowley's 42 per cent to produce a political natural disaster. That latter calculation was a mistake; he had an identity politics problem, and never captured (or perhaps fully understood) the radical energy that's animating the core of today's Democratic Party. Here, some photos from her election-night event.

In his one televised debate with Ocasio-Cortez, Crowley briefly went on the offensive, telling viewers that his opponent had once said that New Yorks gun laws didnt need to be applied in other states.

Greenwald claimed Israel had shot "more than 1,000 peaceful, unarmed protesters in Gaza" as he formulated his question-MSNBC acknowledged numerous Palestinians at the border fence were armed and attempting to breach the security barrier-and read out a tweet quoting Ocasio-Cortez calling the violence a "massacre" perpetrated by the Israelis.

She also managed to tie that activism, along with her vocal, unapologetic demand for the full abolition of ICE to the interests of her district's diverse population. She stated that "from day one" Trump had committed "violations", also noting investigations into the president's former campaign.

President Donald Trump also commented on Mr Crowley's defeat to Ms Ocasio-Cortez, "Wow!" She wasnt inclined to back House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi for speaker, name-checking one of the Houses most left-wing members as a better choice.

Voters in seven US states - Colorado, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah - were picking candidates on Tuesday for the midterm elections.
