White House staffers were scrambling to figure out how Melendez was able to get through, a source told Axios. U.S. President Donald Trump was fooled into taking a prank call while on board Air Force One Thursday, according to the comedian behind the stunt. But Melendez was plainly shocked at the president's willingness to take his call in this case.
Melendez said he was initially unable to get through to the president when he called the White House switchboard and identified himself while recording his podcast Wednesday.
Mr Melendez said he claimed to be Senator Menendez and a fake assistant.
In the conversation, Melendez asks Trump how he plans to proceed on the hot-button topic of family separations at the US southern border, telling the president, "My constituents are giving me a lot of beef about this immigration thing". It's not like, it's good for you or good for me, it's good for both of us ... "I mean, look, you've got 60 percent of the country, they've got to have security at the border". We have to have security at the border, we have to have it.
"I have a big list of people, Bob, and we'll take a look at it and we're gonna make a decision", Trump says. On Friday, he confirmed that timetable publicly and told reporters to expect an announcement Jul 9.
Trump has yet to publicly react to the prank. "Tune into my new Podcast where I prank call the President & he calls me from Air Force One!".
