Though members of Jackson's family, including his wife, Katherine, were at his side when he died, Jermaine Jackson previously told British pub The Daily Mail the family was being kept away from their father. "I am extremely appreciative of that, I will never forget our moments together and how you told me how much you cared".

"But I know that he loves me", she added.

Joe Jackson, the patriarch of the iconic Jackson family, has died at the age of 89.

Perhaps the best place to start in examining this particular dichotomy is Joe Jackson's own early life, in which he was twice disappointed by his own lofty ambitions - first training as a professional boxer and then tending to a short stint playing guitar in a blues band.

Born in 1928 in Arkansas as the eldest of five, Jackson moved to Oakland, California, with his father before relocating in his late teens to a suburb southeast of Chicago. He was working as a crane operator at a steel plant in Gary, Indiana, when he took note of the musical talents of his sons. But it came at a price.

Joe assembled the Jackson 5 in the 1960s and managed the group as they went from unknown child singers to global superstars. Michael also said his father would taunt him about his "fat nose", and later told Winfrey he was so afraid of his father that he would sometimes vomit when he saw him.

But the Jackson siblings didn't all agree on the Joe-was-abusive narrative: Some said it happened, a few said it never occurred. "Once he ripped the wire cord off the refrigerator and whopped me with it ..."

"2: My father's health is not good, but "dying" is a harsh word chosen by headline writers, not me".

Tito Jackson also applauded his father as "one of the greatest men that ever lived" in a 2011 interview with The Guardian. "I love you grandpa".

Past year he said he was "truly sorry" for the way he treated them.

At the same time, he was also a controversial figure who wound up estranged from the kids - including King of Pop Michael Jackson - he set on the path to stardom. His family (and the entire world) may have had mixed feelings about him, but he was undeniably loved. In 1979, Michael fired his father as his manager and took control of his career himself. His stylized videos became entertainment trendsetters.

The Jackson family patriarch leaves behind his wife, Katherine Jackson, and eight of their 10 children: daughters Rebbie, LaToya and Janet, and sons Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy.

Janet Jackson paid tribute to her father on Friday while accepting the 2018 Impact Award at the Radio Disney Music Awards. He had previously suffered a stroke in São Paulo in 2015, along with a number of heart attacks.

Janet Jackson, Joe's youngest child and the most famous after Michael, has said that her father insisted that she address him as Joseph.
