Meeting with staged ceremony on a Singapore island, Trump and Kim came together for a summit that seemed just unthinkable months ago, clasping hands in front of a row of alternating U.S. and North Korean flags, holding a one-on-one meeting, additional talks with advisers and a working lunch.
We firmly reject any false equivalency between North Korea's illegal nuclear and missile programs, which are enormously destabilizing and have been repeatedly condemned by the UN Security Council, and our long-standing joint activities with our allies, which are transparent and defensive in nature. But in the hours before the summit, the White House unexpectedly announced Trump would depart Singapore earlier than expected - Tuesday evening - raising questions about whether his aspirations for an ambitious outcome had been scaled back.
He then showed a clip of a video he played for the dictator in apparent bid to show him the riches North Korea could enjoy without near-global sanctions.
Bloomberg reported that Trump's departure time was moved up in response to Kim's plans to leave Singapore shortly after the summit. The US forces in South Korea, meanwhile, told Stars and Stripes magazine that it had not received updated guidance on cessation of training exercises, and "will continue with our current military posture until we receive updated guidance".
Murphy said that while he supports meeting with Kim, ultimately the CT senator argued that the Trump administration went into the Singapore summit underprepared and ended up getting out-negotiated by the rogue nation. Military exercises could be restarted if the North drags out future talks.
Meantime, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also commenting - saying he supports Trump's efforts and looks forward to getting more details.
In addressing an issue closer to home, Mr Trump said that U.S. college student Otto Warmbier did not die in vain days after he was released from North Korean custody in 2017, as his death helped initiate a process that led to the historic summit in Singapore. The missiles flew back into to their launchers, and a science-fiction like version North Korea took its place - one of crane-dotted skylines, crowded highways, computerised factories and drones, all presided over by a waving, grinning Kim.
Nice and handsome and thin and perfect
South Korea, meanwhile, appeared to have been blindsided by Trump's change of heart on war games.
Trump also agreed to halt joint military exercises between the US and South Korea on the Korean Peninsula, though that decision seemed to surprise both Seoul and the Pentagon. At the same time, the spokesman didn't condemn the decision, and Seoul has repeatedly pressed for a cautious approach to North Korea rather than the hasty agreement that Trump and Pompeo had originally pursued.
"If the goal is to begin to unravel the U.S. -Japan and U.S".
"Wow. If this is it.this is depressing", Robert E. Kelly, professor of political science at Pusan National University in South Korea, tweeted. It does not, for instance, include an agreement to take steps toward ending the technical state of warfare between the USA and North Korea. He also said that he and Kim had discussed human rights during their meeting - though no mention of those violations, or any concessions on them showed up in the final agreement.
Interested in North Korea? The two sides promised to hold follow-up negotiations.
In return Mr Trump axed the drills with, it seems, no warning to Seoul (or even USA forces).
