Relay for Life begins today

After being diagnosed with cancer in his leg at the age of 14 Kurtis Kelly now 29 has become a spokesman for the Canadian Cancer Society on P.E.I. He’s promoting and taking part in the Relay for Life this evening in Charlottetown

The relay set a fundraiser goal of $130,000 this year, and as of Friday night, the funds raised totalled nearly $150,000. "We fight to end cancer, to celebrate hope and more birthdays".

The Relay For Life event is scheduled for June 22 from 6pm-12am.

"We've seen a number of new teams this year so we're glad that people are embracing it", says Vinall.

Again this year, and every year, luminaries were placed along the track by individuals and team members as a way to remember, and to support those affected by cancer.

The reading of the luminarias - part of the Remember Ceremony - is set for 10 p.m.

"I was invited to a team meeting, and right away, I knew this was something I had to be involved in", she said.

It's been almost two decades since this worldwide movement came to Logan County, and for many, it has become an annual tradition to come together to enjoy a night of fun and fellowship, celebrating those who have beaten cancer and those who are going through the battle, as well as honoring their caregivers and remembering those who lost their lives to this dreaded disease.

"You can expect to laugh, you can expect to cry, you can expect to be very busy", says Vinall.

Roberts Lodge That Gives provides a home away from home free of charge for Nova Scotians undergoing cancer treatment and other services that help local patients and their families during a hard time.

"(Relay For Life) helps lengthen lives", said Lynn, a vendor from the Grand Island Relay who brought her Tiki bar stand with its Hawaiian fare to the Greater Niagara Relay.

"The company I work for was a significant sponsor of the event at the time", Mr Farrington said. "By coming to Relay for Life, you are helping to raise money to find a cure for cancer".

Braga's story began before January 7, 2014, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. We started relaying for her when I was seven and have done it ever since. "One thing I've learned is that you may not know the person you are walking next to on the track, but you share the same connection in some abstract way, and that's a lovely thing to share together".

"Putting together an event like this is not easy; it takes about a year of planning", said McMurter.

Wellington said knows people sometimes grow tired of annual fundraising events, or believe they've given enough.

Severe thunderstorm warnings did nothing to prevent more than 150 cancer survivors, as well as hundreds of family, friends, and supporters, from kicking off this year's Miami County Relay for Life in high spirits.

"It hit hard when Tom died because he was so young", said Jean.

This is the 16th year that Windsor-Essex has participated in the national event.

"It's everything. The survivors - listening to their stories and their journeys".
