Top Gun: Maverick will match the same style and tone as the original film.

TheWrap reports Val Kilmer is set to reprise his role in the long-awaited Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Succeeding Scott for Top Gun: Maverick will be Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski.

Kilmer first signaled his interest in returning for the movie a year ago, shortly after it was confirmed by Cruise that the sequel was for real, no fooling, happening. New tech such as drones make the pilots' jobs obsolete, but Maverick and Iceman aren't regular pilots.

Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer, producers of the original return to produce the sequel with Cruise.

While everyone is looking back and feeling nostalgic, there was even more big news for the Top Gun sequel on Wednesday.

Kilmer will be reprising his role as fighter pilot Iceman (aka: Tom Kazansky), according to the Wrap. Harold Faltermeyer, the composer who created Top Gun's legendary theme music, is also returning to the production.

Top Gun: Maverick will be out in theaters on July 12, 2019.

Nobody outside of the production - let alone the writing process - even knows if Cruise's Maverick or Kilmer's Iceman will utter any of their famous phrases, like "I feel the need for speed" and "I don't like you because you're risky".

Kilmer was previously rumored to be joining the cast with a Facebook post writing, "not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script".
