No hostages were seriously hurt. Regardless of who fired the shots, Atkins could be prosecuted for murder because her death stemmed from his alleged crimes. The suspect walked out with a cluster of four hostages and appeared to be already handcuffed as the group emerged through the front door.
"We have successfully taken the suspect into custody without incident", the LAPD tweeted. Meanwhile, police removed the female passenger in the auto, who had a graze wound, from the scene.
A woman has been shot dead inside a Los Angeles supermarket after a teenage gunman stormed the store and took hostages.
They later added that a special SWAT team had been deployed to the scene. "And (the police) returned some fire at him, but he ran straight in [to the Trader Joe's]".
Don Kohles, 91, told the Associated Press he and others inside took cover and laid on the floor as the suspect ran inside. After about 30 minutes of terror and sobs, police came inside and rushed out Kolhes and others near him.
"I ducked behind the 4 foot retaining wall in the parking lot and three LAPD officers ran over, knelt behind it right next to me and opened fire", said Mr Field. Both stores were also on lockdown and no one was injured. He then forced the second woman outside toward a vehicle, and drove away in his grandmother's Toyota Camry, LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said. Atkins allowed some to leave, and other people sneaked out. Among them was a police officer carrying a small child, he said.
Moore later said about 40 people were believed to be in the store when the suspect entered.
"And I see the two front-glass doors shot out".

Officers escorted the girlfriend from the vehicle.
The standoff ended as live TV coverage of the scene showed a man in a tank top and four hostages emerging from the store with their hands in the air.
The gunman, who was not identified, surrendered following a three-hour standoff.
"Our hostage negotiators believed they had established a good rapport with him", the chief said.
A Trader Joe's employee, Melyda Eldorado, died in the standoff, which stretched over several tense hours Saturday before the gunman surrendered.
Authorities said Atkins shot his grandmother seven times and wounded another woman, whom he forced into a auto, at a South Los Angeles home around 1:30 p.m., police said. A cousin of Atkins says his grandmother raised him since he was 9 years old.
