Miles Teller Cast As Goose's Son In 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Details on the new Top Gun are now under wraps but Teller's character will reportedly take his father's place as Maverick's newest wingman and protege in an era when fighter pilots are steadily being replaced by drone aircraft.

Miles Teller has the need.

Actors Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult had been up for the much sought-after part, but Teller won out.

According to Variety, Miles Teller (Divergent, War Dogs) has been cast as Goose's son and Maverick's new protege. Tom Cruise is returning to his role as Maverick three decades later in the Top Gun sequel that is named after his character. However, Goose tragically dies in a plane crash, leaving the opportunity for Maverick to fill a father-figure-type role for the young pilot. Per Variety, the sequel "will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters, and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting".

Tom Cruise finally found someone to take the highway to the danger zone with him.

Cruise is reuniting with Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski who is set to direct the project from a script by Eric Singer (American Hustle).

The Fantastic Four actor is joining the long-gestating project as the son of Goose (Anthony Edwards), the ill-fated companion of Cruise's naval aviator Maverick in 1986's Top Gun. "Two for symmetry. Okay, the posters are staying", Glen tweeted.

The film, which will also returns Val Kilmer as Iceman, is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures in July 2019.
