Smart Downloads will be particularly useful for users in developing markets, where many smartphones are entry-level devices with less storage available.
The ability to download movies and TV shows straight from Netflix mobile app is a very handy feature. "Furthermore, if you don't have space and data constraints, you can always turn Smart Downloads off and download on Netflix the regular way", said Mr Johnson.
The streaming service launched the Download feature in 2016, making it possible for customers to watch shows and movies on the go. With "smart downloads", Netflix will automatically delete an episode when a user finishes watching it and then download the next one, too.
If you'd rather keep shows stored in your phone to watch again and again, though, you can switch off smart downloads in settings anytime. But Netflix's director of product innovation, Cameron Johnson, says the company isn't intelligent enough to start predicting content you might want to watch.
"We also want to emphasize that giving consumers more control over their entertainment experience is at the heart of everything we do, and members can choose when they want to use Smart Downloads". But obviously, you must stop by a WiFi hotspot in order to make everything happen. Users can have multiple episodes of a TV series downloaded at once, but they typically don't download entire seasons.
The app for both iOS and Android, however, is absolutely free, and you can grab it from the links below.
Currently, Smart Downloads only works on Android phones and tablets.
The previews are shown like a slideshow so you can tap play or add it to your list of must-sees or swipe to the next preview.
