The christening marked Louis' second public appearance since his birth in April.
Since then, the christening gown has become a cultural marker in the regal history books as it has been worn by 62 royals in total including Princes Harry and William. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were not present at the christening of their sixth great-grandchild Monday afternoon, according to a guest list released by Kensington Palace earlier in the day.
The gown is a replica of the baptismal outfit first worn by Queen Victoria's eldest daughter and passed down for all royal baptisms until Lady Louise Windsor's christening in 2004.
Prince William and the former Kate Middleton were joined at the christening by both of their families. Though royal christening's usually occur in Buckingham Palace, the chapel has a special place in the monarchy, having housed several important occasions. "She loved all the old classics and Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions for Louis, [big sister Princess] Charlotte and [big brother Prince] George to enjoy as they get older", a friend told the tabloid.
What will Prince Louis wear?
The UK's Press Association said the decision is understood not to have been taken for health reasons and was mutually agreed by the Queen and Louis' parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, some time ago.
The prince will be baptized in the Lily Font, a silver font ordered by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for the baptism of their daughter Victoria in 1841.
Recently, Meghan Markle was baptised in the chapel ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry, while Kate Middleton was confirmed there before she Wednesday Prince William.
