French president Macron tells Buhari to use culture to empower youth in fight against Boko Haram

President Emmanuel Macron of France attributed his decision to visit the Afrika Shrine in Lagos to his nostalgia for the good memories of the iconic place.

On Wednesday, the French president was inaugurating an Alliance Francaise cultural center in Lagos and meeting young Nigerian entrepreneurs.

The Afrobeat musician also invited fellow icons Yossour N'dour, Angelique Kidjo and Asa to join him for a rendition of the hit song.

The French President, who was trained as a senior civil servant at the French Embassy in Lagos in 2004, seven years after Fela died, described the Shrine as a cultural and iconic hub.

"We have to work with African governments", said Macron, addressing the crowd at an upmarket hotel in Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria.

Macron's visit will mark a milestone, as he becomes the first President to ever visit the shrine. Kuti was arrested countless times, and he spent time in prison the last time Buhari was in power, as a military ruler who took over in a 1983 coup.

But the concert hall is also one of Lagos's most historic landmarks, celebrating the legacy of a man who fought back against the establishment, even as he lost his own mother to the violence of Nigerian soldiers. When complications from AIDS killed Kuti in 1997, at least a million people are said to have lined the streets of Lagos for his funeral.

While in Nigeria, President Macron will meet with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and attend a business forum with French business leaders, a luncheon with the thirty Nigerian private sector leaders and a cultural event at Fela's New Africa Shrine.

Saying that the continents share a "common destiny", Macron outlined his vision to solve thorny issue shaking the European Union, saying it can only be solved in the "long run" by Africa.

The smell of marijuana was absent and the gathering of youths that usually gather outside were absent because of the heavy security presence, it says.

Macron stressed the need for Africa and Europe, especially France, to build a new commonality.

Tuesday's special event featured a fashion show, musical performance and art display. I heard him talk I believe he is concerned and wants positve change too.
