The foreign ministry said that Seagal will not be paid for his work.
But on Saturday, Russia honoured Seagal again, this time with a position as a special envoy to the United States.
Russian Foreign Ministry which made the announcement on Facebook late on Saturday said Seagal will be tasked with furthering "Russian-American relations".
Hollywood star Steven Seagal, who was granted Russian citizenship back in 2016, is going to be Moscow's special representative on humanitarian relations with the US.
Since then, U.S. -Russia relations have only got worse however with U.S. intelligence agencies accusing Moscow of interfering in Donald Trump's White House run, an allegation Russian Federation denies.
The actor, who was granted Russian citizenship in 2016, has robustly defended the Russian leader's policies and once told Piers Morgan on ITV's Good Morning Britain that anyone who thought Putin had attempted to rig the U.S. elections was "stupid".
Seagal was also granted Serbian citizenship in 2016, following several visits to the Balkan country.
"It is the case when people's diplomacy meets halfway traditional diplomacy", the ministry said.
Seagal was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment. Last year, be was banned from Ukraine for five years, apparently because of his support for Putin's policies.
"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve", Seagal, who hold both Russian and USA passports, said to TASS news agency. "I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially".
The 66-year-old actor was born in Lansing, the capital city of USA state of MI.
