Samsung Galaxy Note9 First Look: More power in your hands

Just about everything you could possibly want to know about the Galaxy Note9 has already leaked out, but there's still the official launch event to look forward to later today in NY. The Bluetooth functionality requires the S Pen to be charged, which happens automatically when you secure it inside the smartphone. Numerous features are similar to the Gear S3; the Galaxy Watch has LTE connectivity and a battery that lasts "several days".

Samsung has released its own USB-C accessories for this objective, and DeX will also work with compatible third-party dongles. As ever there's microSD support for cards up to 512GB in size, meaning you can have up to 1TB of storage if you buy the bigger variant. We are told that it's still better to use the DeX dock as it has built-in cooling fan, supports up to 2K resolution and it can run more apps simultaneously than using the dongle.

To claim your gift, you will need to log into the Shop Samsung app and submit your details by September 13. Samsung has announced two variants of the smartphone - one with 6GB LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB RAM storage, and the other with 8GB LPDDR4 RAM and 512GB storage. It was Samsung's redemption product that packed a nice little punch.

It has a dual-aperture camera like the S9 with added "intelligence" in software.

Samsung does not break out shipments of its smartphone models, but analysts reckon it has shipped around 10 million Note 8 models so far. We don't know how much storage it'll have for music. There are three different ways to interact with the button (press and hold, single tap, double tap), each of which will perform a new action depending on how you customize it. There's also a secondary 12MP camera that offers 2X optical zoom and it also offers depth of field effects with Live Focus. It will have a "daily briefing" feature and the watch can sync with your calendar and show your appointments on the home screen. Lovers of the game would get an exclusive Note 9 character skin, or alternative appearance for characters.

As an upgrade over the Note8, the Note9 isn't insubstantial from an overall user experience perspective.

Power users will appreciate the bigger battery and larger storage options which isn't available previously in Malaysia.

Announced at an event in NY on Thursday, the Note 9 resembles last year's Note 8, replete with glass front and back, curved edges and slide-out S Pen stylus.

The Galaxy Note9 is designed with the Note loyalist in mind. It's still largely similar to the Note 8's S Pen, and it works just as well too. Apart from those holding out for a phone with a big battery or tons of storage, there's not much here that changes the game. After all, with the new 2018 iPhone X line-up just around the corner, time is of the essence.
