De Jong has made just 37 appearances for Ajax, scoring one goal, he also made it clear that he is happy at Ajax after helping the club to qualify for the Champions League.

He has two Netherlands caps to his name, debuting as a second-half substitute during the 2 - 1 win over Peru last week, before starting in Sunday's 2 - 1 defeat to world champions France in Paris.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri wants to raid AC Milan by signing Italian defenders Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia Caldara in January.

Real Madrid are ready to challenge their bitter rivals Barcelona for the signature of 21-year-old Dutch professional footballer Frenkie De Jong who plays for Ajax.

However, according to Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars, he expects the La Liga giants to return for their top target in the winter transfer window in an interview.

He is also incredibly comfortable playing in the heart of his team's defence, and his versatility is believed to be a major reason behind Barcelona's interest in the 21-year-old.

Reports also claim that Tottenham made a bigger offer for De Jong, though those overtures were also rejected.

"Maybe someday I'll join Barcelona, but not this season", he told NOS. I'm staying at Ajax.

"Barcelona may return for Frenkie in January, but players will not leave in that period". However, that said manager Ernesto Valverde is certainly not happy and has chose to splurge a little further, targeting the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti, Paul Pogba, Frenkie De Jong and many others as potential choices.

De Jong is under contract at Ajax until 2022, so any bid would have to be astronomical to be accepted.
