59,392 of Brees' yards have come since joining the Saints in 2006.

Should Brees break the record - and statistically speaking it's likely he will, as Brees has thrown for at least 200 yards in 92 percent of his home games as a Saint - the league and the Saints will reportedly stop the game if it comes at an appropriate time, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett.

That set up change-of-pace QB Taysom Hill's 1-yard touchdown run that put the Saints (4-1) up 40-13. The Redskins dropped to 2-2. Washington scored its first second-half touchdown of the season early in the fourth quarter, but the efforts were too little too late. Instead, they helped Brees pile up first-half yards with third-down penalties that extended two touchdown drives. Star running back Alvin Kamara ran for 134 yards, hauling in three touchdowns for New Orleans.

Asked if he's talked to current record-holder Peyton Manning yet or if he knows whether or not Manning will be at Monday night's game, Brees deflected again.

"I just play because I love the game and I love to compete and I love being part of this organisation".

Brees then removed his helmet, saluted fans and exchanged hugs on the sideline with his wife, Brittany, their four kids and Saints coach Sean Payton. Brees is no stranger to the record books, but this may be his most prestigious accomplishment yet.

When the clock hit zeroes across the board, the final score read Saints 43, Redskins 19.
