On Sunday night, Tesla, SpaceX, and Boring Company CEO Elon Musk tweeted "The first tunnel is nearly done", adding that the tunnel will open December 10. Through his tunnel-digging firm, the Boring Company, Musk envisions the construction of a zero-emissions underground transit system that transports people using high-speed electric sleds. A bank of elevators would take pedestrians, cyclists or cars from street-level stations to underground tunnel stops.

On Sunday, the CEO tweeted that the test tunnel's opening night event will happen on December 10 with free rides for the public the following day. leaving from near SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California. The company will then offer free rides to the public the next day, he said, allowing passengers to travel as fast as 155 miles per hour.

Entrepreneur Elon Musk has said the first testing tunnel of his Hyperloop transport system is nearly fully completed, and will be open to the public later this year. The Hyperloop system had initially touted top speeds of 760 miles per hour.

Privately held Boring Co has been promoting its plans for tunnels that would allow high-speed travel between cities.

The news comes after Boring Co. signed a deal with Chicago city authorities in the summer to build an express Hyperloop service from O'Hare airport to downtown Chicago. "I think real", Musk replied.
