Eovaldi's masterful performance last night in the Red Sox' 16-1 blowout of the Yankees in Game 3 of the American League Division Series was as good as it gets this time of year. Boston was up a footbally 10-0 after the top of the fourth inning, which was not a result anyone expected, but one that does have some precedence.
Holt made the score 16-1 with his two-run shot in the ninth inning, while completing the cycle.
With the season on the line tonight, Boone cannot let Sabathia go through the lineup a third time unless the Yankees have a huge lead. It's barely halfway over and anyone who's watched a playoff game (any game, really) in Yankee Stadium knows that the team can rally quickly. He said, "I found [Benintendi stealing second base] unusual, but you know, you can still keep pushing the envelope".
After beating the Yankees 4-3 on Tuesday night in NY, the Red Sox eliminated their rivals and moved on to the next round of the postseason.
The ALCS will begin Saturday night at Fenway Park, with Game 2 scheduled for Sunday evening.
Severino's 10-2 record and 2.74 ERA this season at Yankee Stadium, including seven innings of one-run ball the last time he faced the Sox on September 19, should give him all the confidence needed to put the Yankees up 2-1 in the ALDS. Rick Porcello is scheduled to pitch against NY lefty CC Sabathia.
Umpire Angel Hernandez had as rough of a night as the Yankees' pitching staff on Monday night, having three calls at first base overturned by replay review. But I scooted up in the box a little bit, and I was going to be swinging at anything and try to hook anything. "I rounded the bases, and seeing everybody going nuts in the dugout was a pretty cool moment for me".
For the first time since 2013, the Boston Red Sox are heading to the American League Championship Series.
Severino was tagged for six runs on seven hits and two walks in three-plus innings. The stolen base, in particular, was laughable in that it actually offended anyone.
Severino looked out of sorts in the outing, but his rushed pregame warmup likely had little to do with it.
It was electric stuff that played even bigger on the postseason stage.
"He got his normal pitches routine", Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
Facing elimination tonight - along with the threat of seeing the Red Sox pop bottles in their stadium for the second time in less than three weeks - the Yanks are sending CC Sabathia to the mound in an attempt to force a fifth game. Steve Pearce played first and had an RBI single in the fourth. It was the most lopsided postseason loss in team history and a truly embarrassing thrashing.
Yankees: CF Aaron Hicks remained out of the lineup after missing Game 2 with tightness in his right hamstring, which forced him from the series opener Friday.
