Emery urges Arsenal to 'write a new history' ahead of Liverpool clash

Emery wants players that believe in his idea and his system of play, and he's slowly instilling that collective mentality in his players. We are starting this project in a very positive way with what we are doing. Arsenal feel like a club on the up again, and the question now is why it took the hierarchy so long to realise a change of direction was so desperately needed.

The one real hope for a title race worthy of the name this season is that Liverpool remains in touch with City despite being some way short of its best.

"They had it in the second half and we couldn't fight back in the 63rd game of the season, there was not a lot of fuel left in the tank".

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal were often undone by teams taking the game to them like this - Liverpool 5 Arsenal 1, for example - and reacted, some 15 years too late by introducing a 3-4-3 shape that didn't really work.

As the final whistle sounded on this superb spectacle, Arsenal's supporters acclaimed their players and radiated warmth as opposed to the ice-cold atmosphere that hung over much of last season.

FW Alexandre Lacazette, 7 - Came to the rescue with a great strike after a fairly quiet performance up to that point.

Arsenal's persistence deserved reward despite those escapes and their display confirmed their development under new manager Unai Emery.

On Saturday, Liverpool travel to Emirates Stadium in London to take on Arsenal in exactly one such encounter.

"For our result, this point is not enough", Emery said.

"The progress takes time, a long time in football is very hard to demand".

"I need to learn to smile more".

So how has Emery inspired such a swift turnaround from the malaise of recent seasons? A win over Southampton on Sunday and it will, for the first time this season, have a clear lead at the top of the table after Liverpool drew 1-1 at Arsenal.

Torreira has been hugely impressive in the way he recovers possession.

Arsenal's resurgence is not exclusively down to the summer signing of the 22-year-old from Sampdoria. However, according to ESPN, the Egyptian king is fit to play in this match. Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka's revitalization is proof of that. And all of the above is down to one man: Emery.

It remains to be seen if this is an indication that Cech will become Arsenal's cup goalkeeper, but on this season's evidence, which has seen both start seven games, it is the Premier League newcomer who has better suited Emery's style of play.
