"She's a strong, smart woman".

The Republican president has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes.

"This is an unprecedented event", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told an evening news conference.

"There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor", Trump tweeted. "Just remember things can be replaced but we can't", said one. "And those who say that are definitely contributing to the tragedies that we're now witnessing and will continue to witness in the coming years".

The "Camp Fire", which began Thursday, has taken at least 29 lives and destroyed more than 6,700 structures, nearly all of them homes.

He also thanked the LA Fire Department and urged people to donate to help firefighters.

Some of the thousands of people forced from their homes by the blaze were allowed to return, and authorities reopened USA 101, a major freeway through the fire zone in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

A remarkable video taken from a auto driving through wildfires in northern California gives a terrifying perspective of the blaze which has seen thousands evacuated. It has killed at least 29 people.

By Sunday it had consumed 83,000 acres and destroyed at least 177 buildings, officials said.

The devastation was so complete in some neighborhoods that "it's very hard to determine whether or not there may be human remains there", Honea said.

Thicke and his girlfriend April Love Geary also lost their home in Malibu which the Blurred Lines singer had purchased in 2014 for United States $2.4m.

The Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record, and the death toll, which could rise, also makes it one of the deadliest.

An estimated 52,000 people have already evacuated the region, with more than 20 zones listed on the mandatory evacuation orders issued by Cal Fire.

Firefighters on Sunday contained significant flare-ups in wind-prone canyons along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and Bell Canyon in Ventura County, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.

The fire's cause remained under investigation but Southern California Edison reported to the California Public Utilities Commission that there was an outage on an electrical circuit near where it started as Santa Ana winds blew through the region.

Governor Jerry Brown, meanwhile, has formally asked President Donald Trump to release new federal aid in a "major disaster declaration".

"Managing all the forests everywhere we can does not stop climate change", Brown said.

Though the state's drought has eased slightly, it's still abnormally dry, according to CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

"Things are not the way they were 10 years ago".

Butler, 48, said in an Instagram video on Sunday (Nov 11) that his home was "half-gone" amid footage of smoke rising from the debris, which included the burnt shell of a auto.
