Bethesda found itself in hot water with fans last week, after Fallout 76 Power Armour edition buyers noted the cheap quality of the nylon bag received instead of the advertised canvas bag on posters. During the incident, it appears that the user name, contact information, and proof of purchase information provided by a limited number of support customers on their support ticket requests may have been viewable to other customers accessing the the customer support website for a limited time, but no full credit card numbers or passwords were disclosed.
The snafu is the latest in a saga that continues to torment Bethesda and Fallout 76 players frustrated by the state of the game. After submitting support tickets to get a replacement canvas bag, as instructed by Bethesda, users discovered that they weren't just seeing their support ticket, but other people's as well.
On Tuesday, however, user reports began circulating with an ominous allegation: that anyone who filed a support ticket at Bethesda's site was receiving a lot of replies to their threads. "I can see the problems you are having with the game, yes I'm having them too". Not only did this allow them to see active support tickets; they could also see the personal information of the people who had submitted them!
Bethesda has confirmed that they will not be providing patch notes following today's downtime. "Bethesda takes the privacy of our customers seriously, and we sincerely apologize for this situation", the statement concludes. To make matters worse, data breach notification laws require companies that have experienced a data breach to notify anyone who might have been affected; something Bethesda hasn't done.
