Sony's dedicated big event next year can't come soon enough...
A German tech outlet, Techtastic, has discovered a new cartridge patent brought forward by Sony and published by the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) earlier this month.
"In games that originally shipped on multiple discs, like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid, when you reach the end of a "disc", press the "Open" button on the PlayStation Classic console to transition to the next virtual disc". Now, new PlayStation 5 images leaked to reveal Sony's next-gen 8K console. As such, Sony is now good to go with the format listed in the patent.
Sony also explained the how Disc Change functionality and Memory Cards/Save System will work on PlayStation Classic.
That'll be more than enough to push past the projected 17.1 million PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles, and the 10 million Xbox One and Xbox One X systems. However, many gamers now prefer to get their games in a digital format as they can't be destroyed and do not require any physical space.
"Rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it's necessary to continue thinking of [portable gaming] as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable", Sony's Gaming division head, John Kodera, said at the time, according to Bloomberg.
Thus armed, the PlayStation Classic shouldn't have any trouble running older games. Moreover, optical drives occupy a noticeable space in the console.
Sony will keep us guessing about the next product since the company has already made it clear that it has no plans for a Vita successor.
